About This Colourway

High above the timberline, where the air is thin and the silence is absolute, lies the inspiration for Alpine Reflection. It captures that breathless moment when the morning mist begins to lift, revealing a world of granite peaks mirrored in the glass-like surface of a glacial lake. This colorway is a tribute to the quiet grandeur of the high country, a palette that feels both bracingly cool and deeply grounded.

Rather than a simple forest green, Alpine Reflection is a layered study of the wilderness in transition. Deep, saturated conifer teal provides a sturdy foundation, reminiscent of dense pine shadows stretching across the water. These depths are illuminated by streaks of misty cream and silvered sage, mimicking the low-hanging clouds that cling to the mountainside. Speckles of weathered bronze and earthy gold pepper the skein like sun-drenched river stones glimpsed through the shallows, adding a necessary warmth to the icy landscape.

When worked into a project, the yarn behaves like a landscape painting in motion. The colors don't just repeat; they ripple and flow, creating a variegated fabric that mimics the organic chaos of the natural world. Each stitch offers a new discovery, a flash of gold here, a deep pool of teal there, ensuring that no two rows are ever exactly alike. It provides a sophisticated visual texture that looks intricate even in the simplest of stitches.

Alpine Reflection is for the maker who finds solace in the Great Outdoors. It is the ideal choice for heavy-gauge sweaters meant for fireside evenings, rugged accessories that can stand up to a canyon breeze, and heirloom blankets that bring the serenity of the peaks into the home. It is a colorway that doesn’t just sit on your needles; it invites you to take a deep breath, cast on, and find your own peak of tranquility.

What are your washing instructions?

Washing and Blocking Care

You put a lot of love into your stitches, and a gentle wash is the best way to let your finished piece truly shine.

The Soak

Fill a basin with cool or room-temperature water. Hot water is the enemy here, as heat can persuade even set dyes to loosen up. Add a small drop of a mild soap like original Dawn or a gentle wool wash. Even though our yarns are Superwash, treating them with a light touch keeps the fibers crisp and soft. Before slipping your piece in, stir in a good shot of white vinegar. Dropping the pH of the bath locks the dye into the wool, keeping your colors rich, fixed, and vibrant. Submerge your item, give it a soft press beneath the water, and let it relax.

Pressing Out the Water

When it’s time to lift it out, gently gather the piece and squeeze the excess water into the sink. Never wring or twist the yarn, twisting pulls the wet stitches out of alignment and damages the fibers. Instead, lay your item flat on a dry bath towel, roll the whole thing up like a sleeping bag, and gently press down along the roll. The towel will drink up most of the moisture without stressing the wool. If it still feels quite heavy, feel free to repeat with a fresh towel.

Shaping and Drying

Unroll your piece and transfer it to a flat, clean surface or blocking mats. Use your hands to gently coax, pat, and smooth it back to its original dimensions, letting the stitch pattern settle where it belongs. Always let wool air dry completely flat. Hanging wet wool will drag the weight downward, stretching your hard work out of shape.

Keeping Colors Bright

We carefully heat-set all of our yarn and allow it to cool directly in the dye bath to prevent bleeding. Sticking with cool water, a mild cleanser, and that splash of vinegar will ensure your colors stay just as vivid as the day you cast off.

How do you ball a skein of yarn?

How to Ball (Cake) a Hank of Yarn: Step-by-Step Guide

Turning a hank of yarn into a neat ball is an essential skill for knitters and crocheters. Winding your yarn helps prevent tangles and makes your crafting experience smoother. Follow these simple steps to transform a hank into a ready-to-use yarn ball. For a visual demonstration, don't miss the YouTube video by Sheep And Stitch shown below

Materials Needed

  • Hank of yarn
  • Scissors
  • Yarn swift (optional)
  • Yarn winder (optional for caking rather then a ball)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Unfold the Hank

  • Remove any labels or packaging from the hank.
  • Hold the hank at both ends and gently untwist it to open it up into a large loop.

Step 2: Position the Yarn Loop

  • Place the loop over the back of a chair, your knees, or have a friend hold it for you.
  • Alternatively, use a yarn swift to hold the loop in place.

Step 3: Secure the Strands

  • Identify the ties that keep the hank together. These are usually contrasting pieces of yarn or thread.
  • Carefully cut or untie these ties, being cautious not to cut the actual yarn strands.

Step 4: Find the Yarn Ends

  • Locate the two ends of the yarn in the loop.
  • Choose one end to start winding; the other end can hang freely.

Step 5: Begin Winding the Yarn

  • By Hand:
    • Wrap the yarn around your fingers a few times to start.
    • Slip the loops off your fingers and continue wrapping the yarn around them, rotating the bundle as you go to form a ball.
  • With a Yarn Winder:
    • Attach the yarn end to the winder as per the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Turn the handle to wind the yarn into a cake.

Step 6: Continue Winding Until Complete

  • Keep winding steadily, ensuring the yarn feeds smoothly without tangling.
  • Rotate the ball or adjust the swift as needed to maintain even tension.

Step 7: Secure the Yarn Ball

  • Once all the yarn is wound, tuck the loose end under a few strands in the ball to secure it.
  • Your yarn is now balled and ready for your next project!

Tips and Tricks

  • Avoid Stretching: Don't pull the yarn too tight while winding to maintain its natural elasticity.
  • Consistent Tension: Aim for consistent tension to create an even ball that unwinds smoothly.
  • Use Tools for Efficiency: While not necessary, a yarn swift and winder can speed up the process and produce professional-looking results.

About The Bases

In late 2020, before Arcane officially launched, we began collaborating with a mill to create a yarn line designed entirely around our needs. At the time, we’d tested everything from 70/20/10 Merino/Bamboo/Nylon blends to 100% Merino, and a handful of 75/25, 80/20, and 85/15 Merino/Nylon mixes from various suppliers.

What we wanted was simple but specific: the softness of our beloved 85/15 base with the broader versatility and durability of the industry-favorite 80/20. From that pursuit, the Arcane 80/20 Base was born, luxuriously soft, springy, and ready for any project that lives close to the skin. Each variation in this range shares the same 19.5 micron extra fine Superwash Merino fiber and meticulous spinning standards, adjusted only for weight and ply.
